Draxine is the first resource in Sludgineers that makes many players realize the refinery is part of the build, not a side screen. Current full-release footage shows the basic chain clearly: collect Draxium Sludge in jobs, load it into the refinery, process it, collect Draxine, spend that Draxine on later upgrades.
Draxium to Draxine: the simple version

The loop is:
- collect Draxium Sludge while cleaning;
- load the barrels into the Draxium refinery;
- let the processing timer run;
- collect Draxine;
- start the next batch before returning to the field.
Early on, forgetting to start the next batch is a bigger mistake than having an imperfect “best build.”
Which refinery upgrades are actually worth it?
Video-tested progression shows four different problems that refinery upgrades can solve: loading friction, batch handling, processing time and output. They are not the same bottleneck.
Multi-load and Auto-load are excellent once you are tired of feeding the machine manually. Auto-load in particular removes a repetitive trip back to the refinery screen.
Processing speed matters when you return from a job and the resource you need is still not ready. Patch #1 made this path stronger by adding another processing upgrade at the bottom of each refinery tree. The official notes say the previous 120-second minimum can now be upgraded to 90 seconds and then 60 seconds at level 2.
Output/production matters when the timer is no longer the main problem but Draxine itself is still the upgrade gate.
Why Draxine became a launch-week problem
The Steam Community quickly produced a “Draxine Costs?” thread from a player in a late region who had plenty of other resources but kept waiting on Draxine. The developers’ first patch explicitly says it focuses on the late-game grind, lack of Draxine and refinery waiting time.
That is unusually strong evidence: the pain point is not a guide-site invention. Players reported it, and the first balance patch targeted it.
What Patch #1 changed
Patch #1 v1.00.01 did four things that matter to a Draxine-focused build:
- added the extra refinery-processing upgrade described above;
- reduced Draxine cost of higher-tier / late-game upgrades by roughly 10%;
- reduced Draxine and money cost of Drone Capacity and Speed upgrades by roughly 30%;
- increased Refined Resources earned from Safes by 250%.
Those are official launch-week patch values. They are exactly the kind of numbers that should carry a patch label, because they can change again.
A practical anti-bottleneck routine
If Draxine is the only thing stopping you from buying upgrades:
- keep the Draxium refinery fed before every job;
- automate loading so forgetting is no longer part of the problem;
- buy processing speed if the timer is still active when you return;
- open safes when they are available, especially after the Patch #1 refined-resource increase;
- stop spending Draxine on low-impact convenience nodes while a progression-critical upgrade is waiting.
Do not farm cash blindly if cash is already overflowing. A resource bottleneck is solved by increasing that resource’s throughput, not by making a different number larger.
